For Immediate Release>> Friday, April 5, 2014. Freehold, N.J. – iPlay America’s Event Center will host a celebration of Freestyle music featuring Coro, TKA, Noel, David Torres, Johnny O and The Vargas Brothers during a special Cinco de Mayo celebration May 2.
These artists will come together to create an unforgettable evening of pop, rock, electronic, rap, and club dance music.
“We are so excited to host this concert,” said Jessica Schwartz, director of marketing for iPlay America. “It reflects our efforts to bring in a wide variety of performers who appeal to different audiences. Freestyle performances are very exciting and appeal to today’s club goers, but they are also especially fun for people who remember when Freestyle exploded on the New York and New Jersey club scene in the late ’80s. It’s just very fun music you can dance to all night.”
Freestyle emerged in the mid ’80s primarily in Latino communities in New York City, initially as an upbeat fusion of synthetic instrumentation and syncopated percussion with freestyle lyrics, according to a Wikipedia page about it. Coro had hits with “Where Are You Tonight,” “Can’t Let You Go,” and “My Fallen Angel.” TKA, a Latin freestyle trio featuring Tony, Kayel and Angel, enjoyed a Billboard Hot 100 hit with the single “You Are the One,” which was featured in the film “Lean on Me” in 1989. “Silent Morning,” by Noel hit No. 47 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, as did his “Like a Child.” David Torres, one of three original members of “Nice & Wild,” scored hits with “Diamond Girl,” “I’m Not Going to Cry Over You,” and “No Regrets.”
Over the years, Freestyle has morphed to include hip-hop beats, optional stabs of synthesized brass or orchestral samples, and a variety of vocal styles including melodic pop, rap and semi-chanted electro-funk, according to its Wikipedia page. Though house music is more commonly played in clubs today, freestyle continues to flourish in urban areas populated with Latinos and Italian Americans.
